FATAL INFATUATION page 240

As she got beneath the covers and switched off the lights, thoughts of Cain once again tried to invade her mind. She was so tired and weary of fighting them, she didn’t even try. She just closed her eyes and let them carry her off to sleep.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Felicity awoke to a knock at her door. She found herself opening it before she was even fully awake. She looked up groggily and froze in shock…it was Cain.
She stood there, in her short little nightgown, her hair mussed from sleep and her heart suddenly pounding so loudly she was sure he could hear it. She moistened her lips but couldn’t manage to speak. Something in the back of her mind was trying to tell her that she was supposed to be afraid of him. He was a vampire. He had bitten her. He was so handsome…
Cain wore a sad little apologetic look upon his face that completely disarmed her. He didn’t seem threatening in the least. She looked into his deep blue eyes and saw nothing but kindness, comfort, and a plea for forgiveness. He spoke, quietly and sincerely. “I’m sorry I woke you, but I just had to see you.” She just stood there, staring at him in indecisive struggle. “Please trust that I would never hurt you. I just want to talk. Can I come in?”
A million responses flitted through her befuddled mind. She should be angry with him. She should be scared of him. He had told her before that he wouldn’t hurt her, right before he had bitten her; but it hadn’t actually…hurt. If she was smart, she would slam the door in his face. She knew she would never do that though. She should at the very least tell him that he had violated her trust and had no right to come expecting her to forgive him, but the only words she found herself uttering were “Come in.”
She moved like a sleepwalker, dreamy and dazed as she sat down on the bed. He entered and closed the door behind him. The reading lamp by her bed lit the room with a dim glow, although she didn’t remember turning it on. He came to stand before her and took her hand from her lap, raising it to his lips for a small kiss that melted her heart.
He sat down next to her on the bed, still holding her hand in his own. “I am so sorry for my transgression. You’re just so irresistible to me. Try as I might I am completely overwhelmed by your beauty and drawn to your tender soul.” His words gave her joyous chills and she sat in mute wonder, taking in the earnestness of his gaze. “I know I have no right to expect your forgiveness, but please, if you can at all find it in your heart to accept my apology, it would mean the world to me.”
It seemed all the things that she would want to hear…
He continued. “I’ve existed with such darkness hovering over me for so long and you are like light incarnate. I am falling helplessly in love with you Felicity.”
She sat staring into his eyes for a few more moments before she realized that he was waiting for a response. “I forgive you,” she breathed.
She could swear there were tears in his eyes as he gave her a relieved smile and squeezed her hand in both of his own. “Thank you.”
“You’re in love with me?” she whispered, bewilderedly.
“Helplessly.”
She shook her head in disbelief. “You’re a vampire. I’m the one who’s helpless here.”
“I won’t take your blood again,” he promised, “but I might steal a kiss.” He slowly leaned forward to do just that. It was a soft yet sensual touch of the lips; hesitant, seeking her approval. The cherished memory of the first true kiss they had shared surfaced and she knew that she just had to kiss him deeper and experience that euphoria again. She was about to bring her arms up around him to do just that when he ended the kiss and leaned back from her.
Even without taking things further, her head was already spinning. Everything in the room had such a hazy, dreamlike quality to it. Only Cain was sharp and clear to her focus. “Is this real?” she asked him in wonder.
“What I feel for you is real,” he assured her. Her eyes widened, as she dared to believe he could be speaking the truth. He gave her a little nod. “I can’t tell you how badly I want you right now,” he confided in a whisper.
“Then don’t tell me, show me,” she begged him, breathlessly.
He shook his head a bit, as though reluctant to act on his desires. “I try so hard to keep myself under control, even in this, but I’m like a dam holding back the ocean here. Are you sure that’s a force you want unleashed?”
Felicity held his gaze steady with her own. “Drown me.”
He took her into his arms and their lips reunited in sensual bliss. As her tongue danced with his, his hands caressed her lower back sending shivers through her. The kiss seemed to go on forever as the enchanting sense of lightheaded pleasure came back to her from the first kiss they had shared. It was just as she had remembered, and then it became more. Intense and filled with powerful emotion, he kissed her still as he lay her back on the bed.
Cain finally released her mouth as she gasped for air and his lips traveled down her throat. She froze for a moment but he never paused as he moved down her body, bestowing kisses through her thin nightgown along the way. He pushed up the material to expose her hips, her belly, and then her breasts. He found her right nipple with his tongue and after a few teasing flicks he took it into his mouth to suckle. A gasping moan caught in her throat as he ran his hand up the inside of her thigh. He gently eased aside her panties and his finger found her slick with wanting him.
She suddenly realized that it was his bare chest, muscular, smooth, and cool that lay against her stomach and thighs, although she couldn’t remember him undressing. He came back to kiss her again, although his hand continued to make her writhe and squirm as it explored the depths between her legs. She fondled the strong curve of his shoulder with her hand and then ran it down his back to find the soft swell of his ass. She gave it an appreciative squeeze and then dared to let her hand travel around his thigh to find his erection, hard and waiting for her.
The moan that rumbled from his throat was almost identical to the one he had uttered when he had tasted her blood. She stroked and squeezed him gently and then firmly until he forcefully broke from their kiss to remove her hand. He brought her wrists above her head in his own as he parted her thighs with his knee.
She was thrilled but nervous with anticipation as she awaited the thrust that she had only dreamed of but never experienced. She felt him hard and ready, gently pushing at her opening when with a strong and final motion he entered her.
Ecstasy.
Her fears quickly fled as she felt him fill her body with his own, deep inside her like a missing piece to make her complete. She reveled in the rapture of it but then had to suck in a breath of shock as he began to move. Slowly at first but then stronger and faster he thrust himself into her again and again. Each pushing and pulling movement brought tingling waves of pleasure that finally exploded within her in a rhapsody of gratification.
Felicity sat up with a gasp.
The room was dark and empty of anyone but her; silent, except for her own rapid breathing. She was alone.
It was just a dream; a vivid, sensual, achingly real dream. She closed her eyes for a moment, trying to recapture the sensation, unlike anything she had ever known. Past experiences with boys back home hadn’t been nearly as exciting and were anything but romantic. She’d had some fanciful daydreams and tried to imagine what it would be like to love a man, but never anything so immersive as this!
No man had ever awakened such avid desire in her before. She’d never actually met someone worthy of such a fantasy. Knowing what her real kiss with Cain had been like, she had no doubt that he could turn such a fantasy into reality for her.
Then she opened her eyes again with a mental reprimand. You aren’t supposed to be dreaming about him! She reached up to find the place where he had bitten her throat. The warm and tingling sensations caused by touching the spot were much faded and more relived in her memory than on her skin, but still brought back waves of ecstasy to her recollection.
She withdrew her hand and shook her head, trying to clear herself of the thoughts. He’s no good for you. Think of something else, she chided herself as she lay her head back on the pillow, but as she closed her eyes again to try to sleep, she couldn’t help but hope for more dreams.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Thursday morning was a blur of struggle between guilt and daydreams. By lunchtime, however, she decided that although fantasies were fun, reality was completely different. She could not let silly imaginings compromise her common sense. Cain was a vampire. He had bitten her and drunk her blood, and no matter how handsome, she had to consider him dangerous. She would do her best to chase thoughts of him from her mind and focus on anything other than vampires.

Not that she was likely to be able to dodge the subject around Ben and Allie. She planned on taking lunch up to her room to avoid them, but Ben found her just outside the cafeteria. She thought of trying to pretend she hadn’t seen him, but he wasn’t going to let her.

“Liss!” Ben was the only one who ever called her that. Originally, she had kind of liked it. Now she thought of asking him not to, but it seemed pointless and hurtful. He caught up to her. “Hi. Can we sit and talk?”

“Why, have you thought of something else you could say to upset me?”

“I wasn’t trying to upset you,” he said quietly.

“Right, because calling me stupid, questioning my virtue and letting me know that you would like to see someone that you think I care about get killed, shouldn’t upset me?”

“Okay, so maybe I was trying a little, but I had good intentions.”
